Periodontal disease is a multifactorial and often silent, painless disease which affects the gums, bone, teeth and can have systemic effects on the body if left untreated. Periodontal disease in advanced stages, and if not treated, causes tooth loss and may have adverse effects on one’s overall health. Patients with periodontal disease may require more frequent cleanings, periodontal procedures and specialty prescription medications. Many times periodontal disease occurs and needs to be addressed in conjunction with various other types of applied periodontal therapy determined on an individual patient basis.
